I was always taught as a kid to tighten things as tight as I could. It was some strange test of manhood to be able to tighten a nut, or screw into place that my dad could not loosen, or he would have to cringe just a bit to do it. I think this came from the ultimate test of manhood...Loosening the pickle jar!
With skateboards, longboard bearings in particular, this is the opposite of true. You want to tighten the nuts on the axle until it stops (without having to use much force) but not until your ability to tighten stops.
Example of a bearing that was cranked too much. Once loosened and rode a bit the ball bearings smoothed the race back out and everything was peachy)
1. Tighten up the nut until it stops (do not crank it more)
2. Loosen the nut just a little (very very little)
3. Jiggle the wheel a little, back and forth on the axle. You want a small amount of play, just enough so you can feel it. When you pull the wheel from side to side, you want it to make a little clack sound.
The reason for this is that if you tighten the nut too much you risk the washer rubbing against the protective rubber gasket (in the bearing) and it will in turn rub against the bearing cage and create friction and for the lack of more complex words...ruin your bearings.
We check our bearings every time we ride and suggest every one else do the same. Make sure they are tight enough but not too tight. You will master the feel after a few times and will have an all around better cruising experience from it.
Aloha!
Well the original Jaseboards logo has had a good run and is in many countries all over the world! After launching I was advised by web developers that my logo was not practical! "WHAT!! Why would a logo have to be practical!?" I asked. They said that in the web design world and design world in general you have to work within certain boundaries. Those of you who know me know I HATE boundaries! I abide by boundaries but I am not a fan of most of them. To prove a point, I got releases from each of the property owners, including the State of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu and a release from a principle of an elementary school so that we could film the tarp surfing event! That's how bad I am. Trying to be in the skate/longboarding culture but also trying to not give my lil groms any ammunition to use against me when they get older and get picked up for trespassing! Back to the point... we retooled the design and slapped it on our next three...yup I said 3 designs that will be officially released tomorrow! When and where!? be patient!
Here is a tribute shot that was taken yesterday by Alex Mcdonell at the end of a pretty chill sesh we had.
I am sad to see the logo-less wheels, bearings and trucks go. I have had so much fun on these and will keep the last two of the DROP and the KICK in my attic as memorabilia!
(and yes that is my foot in the background. I took my hat off because the humidity was killin me and Alex has an eye for epicness!)
Well it has been forever since I have time to sit down and actually let my fingers FREE! I apologize! The reason for this will come in the next few posts and you will agree that the lack of typing was worth the outcome on the other side.
First things first, lets get some vids on here!
This is Zach Tilton proving to me that these boards can go NUTZ at the park and not just on hills and sidewalks on a campus! Take a look and share it around. Again, the Aloha Friday series videos are shot by me and edited by me for fun so please don't knock my lack of ability! Its all just for FUN!
Aloha!
Here at Jaseboards headquartersup on the North Shore of Oahu....where Aloha begins! (sorry inside joke) We have decided that since we get to celebrate Aloha Friday every single darn Friday that creeps up on us each week, We will film our Fridays and put our events on the "Tube" to watch and enjoy. We would like to thank Holladayphoto For the awesome footage you provided for this flick! You have an eye that can capture magnificent shots and we are stoked to benefit from it!
We will also start inviting other Jaseboarders out to these bi-weekly events. To learn more, win free stuff and.... dun du du duhhhhh! Jaseboard together! We will start with this Hill sesh where it wasn't too steep, crowded or too much of anything but fun. Enjoy as we did and wait for the Epic Bail and Fail by me at the end! I left the rest of the clip in to prove I rolled it off! ;)
I woke up this morning and had an inkling to bomb a hill!! I spoke to Erin Summerill (my AWESOME and talented sister in law) about taking some pics of our play time, called Zach this morning, sadly I only gave him 10 minutes notice (to get all prettied up) and it was on. We headed to "my hill" and started to play.
We were working on some moves and I was being schooled on my own boards! I love that feeling! You never get any better unless you hang with those better than you! Here are a few teaser pics of what will be released in video form in a few weeks.
Enjoy,
Jase
Mahalo Erin for the Pics and Mark for the Love! ;)
